Iskandar lure for retailers

JOHOR BARU: Iskandar Malaysia is expected to become a popular shopping hub, with foreign factory and premium outlets expressing interest in setting up shop in the state.

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said: "Investments in Iskandar Malaysia, especially in the retail sector, are steadily increasing. Shopping malls and hypermarkets, for example, are mushrooming in the region."

He said the national retail and supermarket chain AEON Co (M) Bhd had opened its fourth shopping outlet in Iskandar Malaysia in Bukit Indah, after Tebrau City, Permas Jaya and Taman Universiti.

The growth in the retail sector would create healthy competition and spur the state economy, in turn attracting more investments, he said after a tree-planting ceremony at AEON Bukit Indah Shopping Centre, expected to open on Dec 19. The centre is said to be AEON's second largest after its shopping mall in Tebrau City.
