KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian International Halal Showcase (Mihas) has generated some RM2.08 billion in sales orders, the highest in its five-year existence.
The bulk of the sales was generated from companies producing products that were oil palm-based, such as olein and stearin, food and beverages, furniture, food processing and packaging, machinery, herbal products and confectionary.
In his speech, Abdullah said it was imperative for the Malaysian halal industry to establish alliances or mergers.
"I urge the Malaysian private sector, including government-linked companies, to take the lead in forming these strategic partnerships with domestic and international entities involved in the halal industry."
Abdullah said the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) has been tasked to be the focal point for the development of the halal industry in Malaysia.
"The HDC will spearhead the initiative to enhance the halal brand into a premium brand, incorporating globally accepted standards such as good manufacturing and good hygiene practices."
