Apps Offer Developers Potential For Larget Mart Share -- Ahmad Shabery
KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- The mobile app development market in the country is not only prime for growth but it also offers developers potential for a larger market share, said Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said this would encourage them to create content that would not only help local smartphone users improve the way they conduct their daily activities but also establish a viable and sustainable business through the commercialisation of their digital Internet Protocols.
Ahmad Shabery said currently, there were some 10 million smartphone users in Malaysia and the figure was expected to increase by 60 per cent by 2015.
He said local app developers enjoyed a wide range of support from Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MDeC), from grants and funding as well as coaching on apps development, to creating a viable business model, marketing and networking opportunities with potential investors.
"MDeC has realised this potential early on in the game and was instrumental in driving the Malaysian applications and content development industry though the introduction of the first Integrated Content Development Programme (ICON) in 2009," he said at the MSC Malaysia ICON and Nokia Windows Phone 8 Program Graduation Day here today.
ICON was introduced in 2009 to enable local application developers create world-class applications and mobile content, particularly those focused on the consumers' social and education market.
Meanwhile, MDeC Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, said with the high number of talents in the region, the next step in advancing the ecosystem was to provide developers with the right training, funding and development opportunities.
"This is what we aim to do through our ICON programme," he said.
Meanwhile, the top ten mobile phone applications developers announced today were Chia Shaw Chyn --- 2014 Racing Guide; Aswin Chanthraksuwan -- FirstBeacon; Ng Mun Keat -- iPrint; Koh Chean Siong and Low Lee Tak -- SekMatYeah; JeeShen Lee -- GarageFinder; Leow Cheah Wei -- Wave Generator; Tan Yin See -- Smart Shopper; Chai Wuh Shing -- MyPeribahasa; Rokman Semail -- Zip Zap Tiles; and, John Ungkili -- Unfold Game.
