Ministry Proposes Firms, Factories Create Foreign Workers Joint Committee - Riot
JOHOR BAHARU, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Human Resources has proposed companies or factories that employ foreign workers to establish a joint committee between employer and employee.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said the move was important in effort to take care of the welfare of 1.6 million legal foreign workers besides to avoid the dissatisfaction among them.
"Factories are urged to appoint a supervisor among the foreign workers to facilitate dealings between employer and employee...for instance, for every 500 or 1,000 workers from Nepal, it is proposed to appoint one supervisor among them," he said.
Riot said this to reporters after visiting the factory and workers' hostel of computer components producer, JCY HDD Technology Sdn Bhd, at the Tebrau Industrial Area IV, here today.
Also present were Nepalese Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat and Johor Unity and Human Resource Committee Chairman R.Vidyananthan.
On Aug 26, 2014, some 800 foreign workers staged a strike at the JCY HDD Technology factory outlet at the Kelapa Sawit Industrial Park near Kulaijaya, including setting fire to a factory manager's car and damaging the factory building.
The incident was believed to have been due to the dissatisfaction of the workers towards the employer, which was said to disregard their welfare.
Following this, it is understood that some 55 of the foreign workers were detained by police to assist in the investigation for rioting.
Riot said he was satisfied with his visit today and listened to the explanation by the management of JCY HDD Technology in relation to the incident and the measures being taken to prevent such incidents from recurring.
He said his ministry viewed the incident seriously and hoped it was an eye opener for all parties especially the employer in order to ensure the safety of the workers and the country.
"The ministry is very thankful of the cooperation given by the Nepalese Embassy in tackling the case including organising a meeting with about 4,000 workers today to give a morale boost and advise them to abide by the country's laws," he said.
