Pandas Boost Malaysia-China Trade Ties, Says Hamim
TELUK INTAN, May 28 (Bernama) -- The presence of the giant pandas from China will enhance Malaysia-China trade ties, creating more business opportunities and jobs, said Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Hamim Samuri.

"We should see it in a more positive light, such as the business opportunities arising from increased exports," he said after a seminar on packaging, branding and financing organised by his ministry and SME Corp here Wednesday.

He was responding to the opposition's claims that the pandas -- Fu Wa and Feng Yi -- are a ploy for the Teluk Intan by-election and a waste of taxpayers' money.

He said Malaysia's annual exports to China of RM100 billion for the last five years are expected to rise with the presence of the loveable animals, one of the world's most endangered species, and their loan to Malaysia should be seen as symbolising friendly relations between the two countries.

Hamim said although the government is spending RM100 million over the 10 years the pandas will be in Malaysia, Malaysia's exports to China are expected to hit RM1 trillion in the same period.
